Thai picker notes/help

Updated 16-Apr-2018 • tags apps, pickers, thai

This Unicode character picker allows you to produce or analyse runs of Thai text. Character pickers are especially useful for people who don't know a script well, as characters are displayed in ways that aid identification.

If something is broken or missing raise an issue. For version information see the Github commit list.

About the chart

Includes characters in the Unicode Thai block.

Controls above the text area

Transliterate. Converts the contents of the text area to an ISO 11940-1 Latin transliteration that provides a single correspondence between each Thai symbol and a Latin symbol. It doesn't lead to a good phonetic transcription, but the process is reversible (unlike most phonetic transcriptions). This transcription should produce fully conformant output. There is no need to identify syllable boundaries first.

Transcribe. Produces an output that is intended to approximately reflect actual pronunciation. It will work fine most of the time, but there are occasional ambiguities and idiosynchrasies in Thai which will cause the converter to render certain, less common syllables incorrectly. So the output of these buttons should be treated as something that gets you 90% of the way. NOTE: Before using this button you need to add spaces or hyphens between each syllable of the Thai text. Syllable boundaries are important for correct interpretation of the text, and they are not detected automatically.

Transcribe to IPA. Produces an output that is intended to approximately reflect actual pronunciation in IPA notation. It will work fine most of the time, but there are occasional ambiguities and idiosynchrasies in Thai which will cause the converter to render certain, less common syllables incorrectly. It also automatically adds accent marks. So the output of these buttons should be treated as something that gets you 90% of the way. NOTE: Before using this button you need to add spaces or hyphens between each syllable of the Thai text. Syllable boundaries are important for correct interpretation of the text, and they are not detected automatically.

Remove sp/hyphen. Removes the spaces or hyphens from the highlighted range, or the whole output area, if nothing is highlighted. This is useful to restore the text after adding those breaks in order to do one of the conversions above.

Input aids

ISO transcription. Displays a panel of lowercase Latin characters. As you click on them, the picker generates some Thai text from an ISO 11940-2 transcription. This may need more work to be fully-operational. For example, it is not clear how to input 'an' and get รร.

This transcription tool will insert vowel characters such as ไ to the left of the character(s) they ought to preceed, but may need a little help when a syllable begins with a consonant cluster, such as 'pr'.

Becker transcription. Displays a panel of lowercase Latin characters. As you click on them, the picker generates some Thai text from a transcription in the book Thai for Beginners, by Benjawan Poomsan Becker. The reordering described for the ISO transcription just above also applies for this.
